Outdoor Attractions Near Pineville, Missouri

Pineville sits in the far southwest corner of Missouri, in McDonald County, where the Elk River bends through the hills before it crosses into Oklahoma. It’s not a big town. That’s the point. The land around it is a mix of state park, conservation area, and river access, and most of it’s inside a 20 minute drive.

High Profile of Pineville is on Macadoodle Lane off US-71, about two miles north of the Arkansas line. If you are coming up from Bella Vista or Bentonville, you pass it before you get anywhere else on this list.

Here are five places worth the drive, and what you should know before you go.

1. Get on the Elk River at Elk River Public Access – Pineville

The Elk River is the reason people come to McDonald County. It runs class I to II water through most of the county, which means it moves without fighting you.

You need a place to put in, and the closest manageable one is Elk River Public Access – Pineville at 116 Rhine Street. It’s a one-acre site that provides access to the river through an agreement between the Missouri Department of Conservation and the city of Pineville, which maintains it. Boats are allowed. Anglers pull rock bass, sunfish, suckers, catfish, and black bass out of this stretch.

Practical: It’s located 9.4 miles from the store, about 13 minutes. Special fishing regulations can apply here, so check the Wildlife Code before you cast.

2. Walk the Ozark Chinquapin Trail at Big Sugar Creek State Park

Big Sugar Creek State Park protects a piece of the Elk River Breaks, a landscape of steep chert hills and open glades that don’t look like the rest of Missouri.

The Ozark Chinquapin Trail is a loop of about 3 miles through the Elk River Breaks Natural Area. It follows a bedrock stream, then climbs into upland woodland and glade with views out across the breaks. The trail is named for the Ozark chinquapin, a tree that is now rare, and you’ll also find low prickly pear cactus growing on the dry ground.

Practical: It’s located 16.1 miles from the store, about 26 minutes, at 6727 Big Sugar Creek Road. Bring water. The glade sections have no shade.

3. Ride, hike, or camp at Huckleberry Ridge Conservation Area

Huckleberry Ridge is the biggest piece of public land close to Pineville: 2,106 acres of almost solid oak and hickory forest, with scattered groves of shortleaf pine. It was the first large forested tract the Conservation Department bought in southwest Missouri, back in the early 1960s.

It carries 17.3 miles of multiuse trail open to hiking, biking, and horseback riding. There are designated camping sites, and you can stay up to 14 consecutive days in any 30 day period.

One thing to plan around: This is an active hunting area. Deer, bear, turkey, and squirrel seasons all run here, with archery and firearms. Check the MDC season dates before a fall hike, and dress accordingly.

Practical: It’s located 13 miles from the store, about 24 minutes. Access is off Route K, four miles east of Pineville. General use hours are 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

4. Fish the bank at Mount Shira Access

Mount Shira Access is the quieter option. It’s old field grassland with a small stand of bottomland timber, and what it gives you is the length of the bank. There is plenty of room to spread out, and good populations of bass and sunfish in the water you can reach from shore.

If you don’t own a boat and don’t want to share a gravel bar with a float party in July, this is the one.

Practical: It’s located 17.1 miles from the store, about 23 minutes, on MO-59 near Noel.

5. Go underground at Bluff Dwellers Cave

When it’s 95 degrees on the surface, a cave is the correct answer. Bluff Dwellers Cave sits at 163 Cave Road in Noel, about 25 minutes south of Pineville, and it’s a guided tour rather than a scramble.

Practical: It’s located 18.3 miles from the store. Tours run first come, first served, and hours shift by season, so check the cave’s hours before you drive out.

Worth the longer drive

Roaring River State Park is 37 miles east of Pineville near Cassville, about 53 minutes. It’s a different trip, not an add on to any of the above, but if you have a full day, it’s the closest trout water of that size.

When to go

Late spring through early fall is river season. The Elk River draws the crowds in July, so if you want the gravel bars to yourself, aim for a weekday or push into September.

Fall is the better hiking window. The Ozark Chinquapin loop and the Huckleberry Ridge trail system both open up once the leaves thin out, and the glades at Big Sugar Creek are easier to walk without summer heat. Just mind the hunting seasons at Huckleberry Ridge.

Winter narrows the list to the trails and the cave. The water is still there, but the float outfitters aren’t.

Practical notes for the whole trip

Cell coverage in the hollows is unreliable. Download your maps in town.

Nothing on this list has food service on site. Pineville is small, and the nearest larger grocery runs are south into Arkansas or east toward Neosho, so pack the cooler before you head out.

If you just want a picnic table and a swing set without a drive, Myers Park is in town at 701 Olin Street, 9.7 miles from the store. There is a playground, barbecue grills, picnic tables, and a bandstand you can reserve.
