Massachusetts Voters: Here’s What Question 8 Actually Does

This November, Massachusetts voters will decide the future of legal cannabis in this state. It’s called Question 8, and if you’ve seen the ballot language, you already know it’s not exactly plain English.

Here’s the plain English version.

Question 8 asks whether Massachusetts should repeal the laws that currently permit and regulate adult-use cannabis. That’s it. That’s the whole question. But the outcome is anything but small: a “No” vote keeps the industry you know today in place. A “Yes” vote ends it.

If Question 8 fails (a “No” vote):

• The current licensed adult-use industry stays open
• Retail and cultivation operations continue as they are
• The jobs and companies that make up this industry stay in business
• Adults 21+ keep the right to grow cannabis at home
• The existing regulatory and tax framework stays in place

If Question 8 passes (a “Yes” vote):

• The laws that allow commercial licensing, regulation, and taxation of adult-use cannabis are repealed
• The licensed recreational retail and cultivation industry as it exists today would end, along with the jobs tied to it
• For stores like ours that don’t hold medical retail licenses, that likely means closing entirely
• Adults 21+ lose the legal right to grow cannabis at home

This industry is our business, our team, and, in a lot of cases, our neighbors. If Question 8 passes, it ends the legal adult-use market in Massachusetts, and every job, license, and storefront connected to it.
