You already know the drive. US-31 north out of South Bend, past the Mishawaka and Granger exits, 20-something minutes of nothing much, and then you are in Michigan. Buchanan sits about 15 miles north of the state line, and for a lot of people coming up from northern Indiana, it is the whole reason for the trip. The town leans into it. One of its nicknames is Bu-Cannabis.
This one is for adults 21 and over making a weekend of it. Here is the one rule you can’t get wrong, and then the good part.
No, you cannot take cannabis bought in Michigan back to Indiana. Not in the trunk, not in a sealed bag, not with the receipt. Michigan’s permission stops at the state line.
This guide is accurate as of September 2026, and it is not legal advice. Cannabis rules change at the state and the federal level, so check with state agencies or an attorney before you rely on anything here.
Indiana treats possession as a criminal offense under Indiana Code 35-48-4-11, a Class B misdemeanor at the base level, with higher penalties in some circumstances. The section that matters to you is the part that is not in it: There is no exception for cannabis bought legally in another state. Where you bought it is not part of the offense. An Indiana state trooper is applying Indiana law on an Indiana road, and a Michigan receipt is not a defense.
Federal law doesn’t help either. The April 2026 Justice Department rescheduling order moved FDA-approved products and state medical licensed products to Schedule III. Adult-use products bought on a Michigan recreational menu were not included, so it stays federally controlled for the entire drive.
So, plan the trip the other way around. What you buy in Buchanan is for Michigan. Buy for the visit, not for the ride home.
Everything else is straightforward. Michigan’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency licenses every adult-use store in the state, and any adult 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID can shop the recreational menu. Our companion post, Can Indiana residents legally buy cannabis in Michigan?, covers the purchase limits, what counts as valid ID, and what to expect walking in.
Buchanan is small enough to park once. Front Street is the spine of it, and three of the four stops below are within five miles of each other. Distances here are measured from the shop at 804 E Front St.
The trail runs about four miles one way, with loops branching off the main path and decks that look out over the creek. It threads through town rather than around it, which is why it works as a first stop. Thirteen mills once ran on McCoy’s Creek starting in the 1820s, and there is a 70-foot mural along the Smith and Oak section telling that story. The trailhead at 209 Schirmer Pkwy is about a mile from the shop, and the trail is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, so an evening walk is on the table.
Pears Mill opens Saturdays only, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and it is only open between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. Six days a week it is a locked building, so if the mill is on your list, that is the morning your weekend has to start. It is at 121 S Oak St, close enough to the shop to walk, and it is the reason the creek trail exists in the first place.
About four miles east at 905 E Elm Valley Rd, this one is a bog, not a park with a playground: boardwalk, quiet, the kind of place where the loudest thing is you. Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Wear something you do not mind getting wet, and go earlier in the day if you want it to yourself.
Fernwood Botanical Garden is about five miles south at 13988 Range Line Rd in Niles, and it is the only stop here that needs real time. Gardens, woodland trails, and a nature preserve on one site. It is closed Mondays and open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. the rest of the week, which makes it a Saturday or Sunday stop for a weekend trip.
We are at 804 E Front St, Buchanan, MI 49107, open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, phone (269) 409-8427. Recreational only, so no medical card is needed. Any adult 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID can shop the menu. There is an ATM on site, and we take debit. You can also order ahead for in-store or curbside pickup if you would rather not wait.
Our sales associates work the floor all weekend and know what moved and what did not. Tell them what you are after and how the rest of the day looks. That conversation is free and it is faster than reading labels.
Front Street, 9 to 9, seven days. Come see us.
