Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong
Popularly known throughout the 70s and 80s as Cheech & Chong, this comedy duo is the blueprint of the hippie era. They used to feature their love for cannabis throughout a greater part of their work, which mostly involved stand-up comedy routines, studio records, television shows, and feature films.
We view their active and eager participation in cannabis for over forty years as a true embodiment of the free love era. As some of the oldest industry veterans and prominent figures in cannabis activism, we can look back at their work and build upon their legacy to move forward with cannabis legality.
Willie Nelson
Another elder cannabis activist, Willie Nelson is a country star who has been active since 1956. He was one of the most popular American country musicians of the late 20th century, producing notable works such as “Always on My Mind” and “Let’s Face the Music and Dance.”
Willie Nelson serves as an advisory board co-chair of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), promoting the legalization of cannabis. He is also responsible for the motto “Tax it, regulate it, and legalize it!” that you might have seen going around your local cannabis rallies.
One of his more recent contributions to the cannabis community is his COVID-19-era benefit concerts that raised money to support The Last Prisoner Project. His support for this restorative justice program shows his demand for justice for those convicted of cannabis-related crimes.
Joe Rogan
You might recognize Joe Rogan as a UFC interviewer and color commentator. He also hosted the American adaptation of Fear Factor between 2001 and 2006. Rogan is vocal about his support for cannabis legalization, speaking out on Instagram and hosting “The Union” in the cannabis community. Michael Phelps
Eight-time American Gold Medalist Michael Phelps is best known in the cannabis community as the Olympian the media attacked over posing with a marijuana pipe. In 2009, when Phelps was 23, he was hanging out at a fraternity party. Anyone who went to college or watched movies can imagine what went on.
The cannabis community continues to embrace Michael Phelps as an example of how weed does not deserve all the negative press it gets. If this athlete can still perform exceptionally at his sport despite using a bit of marijuana, then the media should see that marijuana isn’t an issue.
Wiz Khalifa
American rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor Wiz Khalifa is one of the more recent influential cannabis icons we celebrate. Many people will recognize his contributions to the "Furious 7" theme song, "See You Again," which constantly played while the film was in theaters.
He has always been open about his use of cannabis, going so far as to declare in interviews that he smoked every day and spent about $10,000 on cannabis. However, since 2014, The Cookie Company has sponsored him. He now gets cannabis for free and even has a strain named after him.
Snoop Dogg
Snoop Dogg is another American rapper that many might immediately associate with cannabis use. He regularly smokes cannabis and has made it a trademark of his image. This recognizable artist has collaborated with other prominent figures in pop culture, including Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, and Gorillaz.
A lot of Snoop Dogg’s business ventures and investments throughout the 2010s centered around marijuana and cannabis edibles use. For example, he became a minority investor in Eaze in 2015, a startup dedicated to weed delivery around California. He also launched a digital marijuana news platform in the same year.
